Karitane's History

Karitane was constructed in 1925 by the Karitane Society to house expectant and new mothers and their babies.

Karitane's corner stone was set and the building was dedicated on 20 June, 1925 by Hon. Heaton Rhodes, KBE, one of Christchurch's most prominent citizens, and then New Zealand's Minister of Defence. Thirteen years later Karitane doubled its space by the addition of an upper floor. The Hon. Viscount Galway, OBE, Governor General of New Zealand, dedicated this addition on 20 April, 1938 in an elaborate ceremony on the site. The Karitane Society was among the most respected and patronised community organisations in New Zealand.

A plaque still hanging in the Karitane nursery wing thanks the rural districts that made contributions to the Karitane Mother and Baby Hospital.
